Furniture Polish & Emergency Care Tips

Furniture Polish

Mix in a spray or squirt bottle:

½ cup olive oil
20-30 drops lemon essential oil (or ½ tsp)*

Shake well before using.  Apply a small amount to a flannel cleaning rag or other soft cleaning cloth.  Spread evenly over furniture surface. Turn cloth over and polish dry.

$$ This mixture costs about 50¢ to make.

*Many recipes call for lemon juice, which would require refrigeration of any unused portion.  If desiring to use this option, use 2 tsp. juice.  After refrigeration, you will need to let your polish thaw for about 10-15 minutes before it is usable.

Here are some additional tips for emergency or trouble areas:

For water spots, rub the area gently with a dab of toothpaste on a damp cloth.

For grease spots, immediately pour salt on the area and let sit for at least 15 minutes.  Wipe away with water and dry.

For scratches, mix equal parts of lemon juice and vegetable oil.  Buff away the blemishes with a soft cloth.

For deeper nicks, try using furniture pens.  We bought a Guardsman Furniture Touch-Up Kit many years ago, and it still has lots of life left in it.  These are like permanent markers with 3 wood tones that you can apply in layers to achieve the color you need.

For permanent marker on wood (don't ask me how many times I've used this one!), apply acetone-free fingernail polish remover and a rough scrubbing pad.  Don't scrub too deeply into the stain!  Follow-up with a quick polish.
